Pre-requisite: One Tandem Skydive.
Please note: The Solo course requires the ability to make decisions in a very fast moving and high stress environment. You must accept all responsibility for your own safety when making a solo skydive. Your failure to make the correct decisions during a solo skydive can result in severe injury or death.
You receive approx. 5 hours
of ground school followed by a comprehension test and one skydive from
4,000 feet. The Solo course teaches skydiving foundation skills - a
significant portion of the class involves learning how to determine
if your main parachute has opened correctly and if not, how to perform
the necessary emergency procedure. During the course you will be taught
each skill used on the skydive and will practice them with your instructor,
then demonstrate them correctly before being cleared to write the comprehension
test. For your skydive the on-board instructor (or "jumpmaster")
will take you to 4,000 feet. On your exit you climb out of the plane
and hang off the strut of the airplane - all practiced until perfect
during the ground-school. When the instructor gives you the "go"
command you make your skydive - he starts the main parachute opening
as you let go. It takes the main parachute 3 - 5 seconds to open and
start flying. You are solely responsible for doing the Flight Control
Check to determine if the parachute is safe to fly and land or if you
are having a malfunction. Malfunctions are rare, but we do practice
the procedure for dealing with one prior to every skydive we make. Once
you determine you have a "good" parachute above your head
it is yours to fly and land. A 2nd instructor on the ground provides
instructions via one-way radio to teach the parachute flight pattern
and assist with the landing.
Please come well rested and bring a lunch. The course instructor and Pacific Skydivers management reserve the right to decide if you are ready to make a solo skydive based on your performance and attitude demonstrated during the course.
